The Agha Bozorg Mosque and madrasa in Kashan is a masterpiece of nineteenth-century Qajar religious architecture, built for a revered local cleric. Its most admired feature is a sunken central courtyard set below the level of the entrance, giving the symmetrical facade a striking two-storey depth as seen from the portal. A large dome and twin minarets rise above earth-toned brick walls decorated with tilework. The mosque combined worship and teaching, with student cells around the lower court, exemplifying Kashan's builders.
