Summer in Swedish Lapland still moves to the rhythm of reindeer, as Saami herders guide their animals up toward the mountains along routes worked for countless generations. No larger landscape on Earth remains shaped by this kind of seasonal herding, and beneath the ancestral geography lie glacial moraines and shifting watercourses that record the region's ongoing geological story. UNESCO inscribed the Laponian Area as a Mixed World Heritage Site in 1996.
