The Abbey of Saint Gall in northeastern Switzerland was one of the most important monasteries in medieval Europe, and its precinct is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Baroque cathedral, rebuilt in the eighteenth century, dazzles with frescoed ceilings, pale green and gold decoration and a richly carved choir. Beside it lies the Abbey Library, a serene hall considered among the most beautiful in the world, holding thousands of manuscripts including works copied by early medieval monks.
