The great brick church of St Mary in Gdańsk, an archcathedral basilica, is often described as one of the largest brick churches in the world, able to hold many thousands of worshippers. Built over more than a century from the fourteenth, its plain, massive tower dominates the skyline of the old Hanseatic port. Inside, a starry vaulted ceiling covers a vast, luminous interior that holds an astronomical clock and copies of major artworks. Rebuilt after wartime damage.
