The Palacio de Santa Cruz is a seventeenth-century Baroque building near Plaza Mayor that today serves as the headquarters of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Originally built as a court prison and later a palace of justice, its twin corner towers and austere brick-and-granite facade are landmarks of old Madrid. The internal courtyards preserve the character of the Habsburg era. While the working ministry limits interior access, the exterior and its ornamental portal are readily admired by those exploring the historic quarter.
