Set on the slopes of Pichincha volcano above Quito, this monument and military museum commemorate the Battle of Pichincha of 1822, which secured Ecuador's independence. A large concrete structure crowned by a stylized condor and figures rises near the battlefield, with a temple-like hall displaying military history exhibits and murals depicting the campaign led by Antonio José de Sucre. The elevated site offers sweeping views over the capital and surrounding Andes, and ceremonies mark the anniversary of the battle each May.
