Standing in a busy plaza in central Lima, this monument honors Colonel Francisco Bolognesi, who died defending the city of Arica against Chilean forces during the War of the Pacific in 1880. The original version showed him falling wounded, but it was later replaced by a more heroic depiction of him standing defiant with a raised pistol, echoing the phrase attributed to him about fighting to the last cartridge. The tall pedestal and dramatic bronze figure anchor one of the capital's principal roundabouts, honoring a revered symbol of resistance.
