Medieval stone walls still encircle Visby, the Hanseatic port on Gotland that led Baltic commerce from the 1100s to the 1300s. Behind the 13th-century ramparts stand over 200 warehouses and merchants' houses from the boom years, which together make this the best-preserved fortified trading town in northern Europe. That completeness carried Visby onto the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995.
