The Alexandria National Museum occupies a restored Italianate villa in the Mediterranean city, presenting the layered history of one of antiquity's great ports. Its three floors are arranged by era, from Pharaonic and Greco-Roman antiquities recovered on land and from the harbour, to Coptic and Islamic artefacts on the upper levels. Displays include statues, coins, jewellery, mosaics and objects raised from underwater excavations near the ancient waterfront. The elegant former mansion suits the collection's intimate scale.
