The Nubian Museum in Aswan documents the civilisation of Nubia, much of which was submerged when the Aswan High Dam created Lake Nasser. Opened in 1997 with UNESCO support, its galleries move from prehistory through pharaonic, Christian and Islamic periods, showing rescued sculpture, jewellery and models of relocated temples. Landscaped grounds recreate a Nubian village with traditional houses and a cave of early rock art. The sandstone architecture echoes local building traditions.
