Liaoning Provincial Museum

This large museum in the new Hunnan district of Shenyang is renowned for its collection of ancient calligraphy and painting, including rare works on silk and paper. Its holdings also feature Liao-dynasty gold and silver, ceramics and embroidery reflecting the cultures of China's northeast. Galleries trace the region from prehistoric jade-carving cultures through the Manchu rise to power. The scale of the modern building allows unusually generous space for its fragile scroll paintings.
