This provincial museum in Changsha is celebrated worldwide for the Mawangdui finds, including the astonishingly preserved body of Lady Xin Zhui and her painted silk funerary banner from the Han dynasty. Reopened in a redesigned building in 2017, it reconstructs the layered tomb and displays lacquerware, textiles and manuscripts from the burial. Additional galleries survey Hunan's bronze age and folk traditions. The tomb reconstruction, viewed from descending walkways, is among the most striking museum experiences in China.
