Faaa, on the coast just west of Papeete, is home to Tahiti's international airport, the principal air gateway to French Polynesia, built partly on reclaimed land jutting into the lagoon. As the arrival point for nearly all visitors to the region, the airport is the threshold to the Society Islands, Marquesas and Tuamotus beyond. The commune of Faaa itself is the most populous in French Polynesia and known for its assertive local identity. For most travellers, Faaa is the first and last impression of Tahiti, framed by lagoon views on landing.
