The Moqua Caves in the Meneng district of Nauru contain an underground freshwater lake, Moqua Well, hidden beneath the island's limestone. Historically the well was an important water source and a place of refuge, and its still, clear pool sits deep within a cavern reached through the pinnacle karst. In a small, arid island heavily scarred by mining, this subterranean freshwater body is both a natural curiosity and a resource of real significance.
