The Runit Dome, sometimes called 'the Tomb', is a large concrete cap on Runit Island in Enewetak Atoll sealing radioactive soil and debris left over from United States nuclear tests. Built in the late 1970s over a bomb crater, the dome was never lined underneath, and concerns persist that rising seas and cracking could release its contents into the lagoon. It has become one of the most-cited physical emblems of nuclear waste and Pacific colonial history.
