Abemama is an atoll in the central Gilbert Islands with a broad lagoon and a place in literary history as the island where Robert Louis Stevenson stayed during his Pacific voyages. Once the seat of a powerful local ruler, it retains associations with traditional Gilbertese kingship. Its wide lagoon, coconut plantations and quiet villages typify the outer islands of Kiribati, far from the crowding of South Tarawa. Reached by domestic flight, Abemama offers travellers a glimpse of slower atoll life and a tangible link to the region's.
