Vaitupu is the largest atoll of Tuvalu by land area and one of the country's most populous islands after the capital. It is notable as the home of Motufoua Secondary School, historically the main boarding school for the whole nation, drawing students from across the scattered islands. The atoll has a large lagoon and a strong communal life centred on its villages and maneapa. Remote and infrequently visited, Vaitupu offers a window into traditional Tuvaluan island society and is significant in the country's educational and cultural history.
