This low, palm-fringed spit at the western edge of Apia has been the political and ceremonial heart of Samoa for generations. It holds the national Parliament House (Maota Fono), the tombs of paramount chiefs, and a scattering of memorials commemorating the islands' colonial disputes and independence. Visitors walk a quiet shoreline lined with monuments while looking out toward the reef, and the peninsula remains the traditional gathering place for the country's matai.
