Fort Téremba stands on the west coast of the New Caledonian mainland near Moindou, a restored nineteenth-century fortification tied to the territory's history as a French penal colony. Built to control convict labour and guard the settlement, it later saw fighting during a Kanak uprising. The stone bastions and buildings now house a museum recounting the harsh convict era and colonial conflict, and the site hosts an annual historical re-enactment. Overlooking the coast, the fort is a significant heritage monument outside the capital.
