Saint Joseph's Cathedral crowns a hill overlooking central Nouméa, its twin spires forming one of the most prominent features of the capital's skyline. Built in the late nineteenth century, partly with convict labour during the penal colony era, it combines a neo-Gothic exterior with a richly decorated interior of stained glass and carved woodwork. As the seat of the Archdiocese of Nouméa, it remains an active place of worship and a key monument of the city's colonial history. Its elevated position gives fine views over the town.
