Point Cruz is the central waterfront district of Honiara and the commercial core of the Solomon Islands capital. The small headland gave its name to the harbour first charted by Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña in the sixteenth century. Today it holds the main shipping wharf, yacht anchorage, shops and offices, with the coastal road running past the market and government buildings. As the historic and modern heart of the city, Point Cruz is where much of Honiara's business and daily bustle concentrates, framed by views across the strait.
