Scattered across smooth granite outcrops in northern Bohuslän, the Tanum rock carvings amount to one of Europe's great Bronze Age picture galleries. Ships, hunters, animals and weapons were hammered into the stone by people whose everyday life and beliefs the images still record with startling clarity, and the panels stand out for both their sheer number and their artistry. UNESCO recognized the ensemble as World Heritage in 1994.
