Iron made Sweden an industrial power early, and nowhere tells that story more completely than Engelsberg. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Swedish works like this one produced iron of a quality that led the world, and Engelsberg survives with its furnace, forge and manor buildings as the most intact ironworks of its kind in the country. UNESCO placed it on the World Heritage List in 1993.
