This large natural and cultural history museum stands in the Carlton Gardens beside the Royal Exhibition Building, north of the city centre. Opened in its current building in 2000, it spans galleries on dinosaurs, evolution, the human body, Victorian history and a living forest gallery of towering ferns. The Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre presents the stories of the state's First Peoples in their own voices. Among its treasures is the mounted body of the champion racehorse Phar Lap.
