This late-baroque church occupies one of the highest points in Ouro Preto, the last of the town's great colonial churches to be completed in the early nineteenth century. Its simple whitewashed exterior with a central stone doorway contrasts with the ornate decoration typical of the region. From the terrace before its facade, visitors gain a broad panorama across the valley to the surrounding churches and hills. Its elevated setting makes it a favoured viewpoint for taking in the layered skyline of towers and rooftops below.
