Pumapungo sits on the site of an important Inca settlement on the southern edge of Cuenca's historic centre, once part of the city the Incas called Tomebamba. The complex combines an archaeological park of stone foundations and terraced gardens with a large museum presenting Ecuadorian ethnography, coins and religious art. Exhibits include reconstructed indigenous dwellings and displays on Amazonian cultures. A rehabilitation area for native birds occupies the riverside grounds, linking pre-Inca heritage with the modern city above.
