Central Suriname Nature Reserve

Deep in west-central Suriname, 1.6 million hectares of primary rainforest form one of the most pristine tropical wildernesses left on Earth. The reserve safeguards the Coppename River's upper watershed, where over 5,000 vascular plant species have been recorded and jaguars, giant river otters, tapirs, harpy eagles and eight kinds of primate live beneath an unbroken canopy. UNESCO inscribed it as World Heritage in 2000, a benchmark for intact lowland and montane tropical forest.
