A historic town on a sandspit at the mouth of Kingston Harbour, once one of the wealthiest and most notorious ports in the Caribbean and a haven for privateers. A catastrophic 1692 earthquake sank much of it beneath the sea, leaving a submerged archaeological site of international importance. Surviving landmarks include an old fort, a church and a tilted powder magazine known as Giddy House. Reached by a causeway, the fishing village today offers seafood, history and a window onto Jamaica's turbulent colonial past.
