The seat of Belize's bicameral legislature stands at the centre of the planned capital, Belmopan, built inland after Hurricane Hattie devastated Belize City in 1961. The assembly building's low, angular design is said to echo a pre-Columbian Maya temple, reflecting the country's ancient heritage. Around it are ranged the ministries and a ceremonial plaza. As the newest of Central America's capitals, Belmopan centres its civic life on this compact government complex.
