The Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Antigua dominates the Plaza Mayor of Casco Viejo, the old walled city. Built between 1688 and 1796 after the relocation from Panama Viejo, its twin bell towers are faced with pearly mother-of-pearl shell that gleams in the sun. Recently restored ahead of a papal visit, the interior holds gilded altars and colonial religious art. It anchors the historic quarter's principal square lined with cafes and government buildings.
