The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, completed in 1993, replaced the ruined old cathedral after the 1972 earthquake. Designed by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, its striking modern form is crowned by 63 small domes arranged in a grid, a shape meant to withstand seismic shocks. The stark concrete interior centres on a bronze crucifix, and a side chapel holds the Blood of Christ. Its bold, controversial design makes it one of Latin America's most unusual cathedrals.
