The Museo de Arte de El Salvador, known as MARTE, is the country's principal art museum, opened in 2003 near the anthropology museum. Its collection surveys Salvadoran painting and sculpture from the nineteenth century to contemporary work, including canvases by noted national artists. Temporary exhibitions bring international and regional shows to the capital, and an auditorium hosts talks and film screenings. The bright modern building forms part of San Salvador's western cultural district.
