This Jesuit church in the centre of Mérida, built in the seventeenth century, faces a leafy square flanked by colonial buildings a short walk from the cathedral. Its restrained stone facade and single tower rise above one of the city's most pleasant plazas, popular for weekend markets and evening gatherings. Inside, gilded altarpieces and religious paintings reflect the devotional art of the colonial Yucatán. The surrounding square, with its cast-iron benches and shade trees, is among the most sociable public spaces in the historic core.
