This large modern museum in northern Mérida is devoted to the Maya civilisation, past and present, and to the Yucatán peninsula that remains its heartland. Designed to evoke a great ceiba tree, its galleries display sculpture, ceramics, jade and everyday objects drawn from archaeological sites across the region alongside exhibits on contemporary Maya life. Interactive screens and reconstructions convey the achievements of a culture famed for its astronomy and writing. At night the building serves as a screen for projected light shows.
