The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate crowns a hill in Guelph, a soaring Gothic Revival church of limestone whose twin spires dominate the surrounding city. Modelled loosely on the great cathedrals of Europe and completed in stages from the 1870s, it was elevated to the rank of minor basilica in recognition of its architectural significance. Its ribbed vaults, rose window and hilltop setting make it one of the most impressive churches in the province. The building anchors the historic core of the city laid out around it.
