Sudan's only atoll rises from the central Red Sea 25 kilometres offshore: Sanganeb, a lighthouse-topped ring of coral alive with sharks, turtles and manta rays. Its partner component, Dungonab Bay and Mukkawar Island 125 kilometres north of Port Sudan, weaves reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds and islets into habitat for seabirds and marine mammals — including a globally important population of dugongs. UNESCO inscribed the two marine parks in 2016.
