Near Grand Island, this open-air and indoor museum recreates prairie-town life of the 1890s across a railroad village of relocated period buildings, including a depot, church, and homes staffed by costumed interpreters in summer. A main building designed by architect Edward Durell Stone sits on an island surrounded by a moat, holding galleries on Plains Indians, pioneers, and the settlement of central Nebraska. Antique farm machinery and a working steam train round out the site.
