The Rosenberg Library in Galveston is the oldest continuously operating public library in Texas, opened in 1904 through a bequest from merchant Henry Rosenberg. The stately building endured the era of the catastrophic 1900 hurricane and houses not only a lending library but a museum and one of the state's most important archives of Texas history, including documents on the Gulf Coast and the Civil War. Upper-floor galleries display maritime art and historical artifacts.
