This immense Romanesque limestone church rises unexpectedly from the wheat fields of tiny Victoria in western Kansas, earning the popular name Cathedral of the Plains. Completed in 1911 by German-Russian immigrant farmers who quarried and hauled the native stone themselves, its twin towers reach over one hundred and forty feet, dwarfing the small town around it. The soaring interior and hand-built craftsmanship testify to the faith and labor of the settlers. It remains an active parish and a striking rural landmark on the high plains.
