Completed in 1871, Nevada's silver-domed capitol in Carson City is a compact Italianate building of native sandstone quarried near the state prison. One of the oldest capitols west of the Mississippi still in use for state offices, it houses the governor and offices along with a small museum on the upper floor. The legislature meets in a separate modern building nearby. Surrounded by a tree-shaded plaza with monuments, the historic structure reflects the wealth and ambition of the Comstock silver era that built the state.
