Across from the capitol in Helena, this museum holds one of the country's most important collections of art by Charles M. Russell, the cowboy artist whose paintings and bronzes captured the vanishing frontier. Beyond the Russell gallery, exhibits trace Montana from Native peoples and the fur trade through mining, homesteading, and statehood, drawing on a deep collection of photographs and artifacts. The society also maintains extensive archives used by researchers.
