Helena's Greek Neoclassical capitol, completed in 1902 of Montana granite and sandstone, is topped by a copper dome crowned with a statue said to represent Liberty. Inside, murals depict scenes from the state's history, including a large Charles M. Russell painting of Lewis and Clark meeting the Salish people, one of the artist's largest works. The rotunda and House and Senate chambers are richly decorated with regional themes. Free tours highlight the art program, designed to celebrate Montana's landscapes and peoples.
