Designed by architect Cass Gilbert and completed in 1905, Minnesota's capitol in Saint Paul is crowned by one of the largest self-supported marble domes in the world, modeled on Michelangelo's dome for St. Peter's Basilica. Above the entrance a gilded sculptural group of horses called the Quadriga gleams against the white Georgia marble. Recently restored, the interior features murals, grand staircases, and legislative chambers open to visitors on free tours.
