Built in 1901 before Arizona achieved statehood, this Phoenix building served as the territorial and then state capitol before the legislature moved to adjacent modern wings. Constructed of local granite and tufa stone to suit the desert climate, it is topped by a copper dome crowned with a weather-vane figure of Winged Victory. It now operates as a museum interpreting Arizona's political history, with restored governor's and legislative offices.
