Crowning a hill above Salt Lake City, Utah's Neoclassical capitol commands sweeping views over the valley toward the Wasatch and Oquirrh ranges. Completed in 1916 of Utah granite with a copper dome, its rotunda is decorated with murals and a ring of pendant lights. The grounds bloom with cherry trees each spring, drawing crowds to the hilltop terrace. A 2000s seismic retrofit placed the entire building on base isolators to protect it in earthquakes. Free tours explain the state's political history and the building's art and symbolism.
