Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe

More pyramids stand in Sudan than in Egypt, and a remarkable concentration crowns the desert ridges of Meroe, royal city of the Kingdom of Kush between the Nile and Atbara rivers. From the 8th century BCE to the 4th century CE, Kushite rulers — who for nearly a century governed Egypt itself — built temples, palaces and water works here and at the religious centres of Naqa and Musawwarat es Sufra, blending African and Mediterranean worlds. UNESCO inscribed the sites in 2011.
