On the Blackstone River in Pawtucket near Providence, this modest wooden mill is celebrated as the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. Built in 1793, it was the first factory in the country to successfully spin cotton yarn using water-powered machinery, launched by Samuel Slater from English designs. Now a museum, it preserves period spinning and weaving equipment demonstrated, alongside a restored water wheel and an early machine shop.
