This compact Greek Revival building in downtown Raleigh, completed in 1840, is one of the best-preserved statehouses of its era in the country. Built of local gneiss and shaped like a cross with a central domed rotunda, it once housed the entire state government under one roof. The rotunda holds a copy of an Antonio Canova statue of George Washington in Roman dress, replacing an original destroyed by fire. Now a museum and ceremonial space, the surrounding square is dotted with monuments across a landscaped historic grounds.
