Crowning a hill above downtown Providence, this white Georgia marble building was built in 1904 to designs by the firm McKim, Mead and White. Its self-supporting marble dome is among the largest of its kind in the world, topped by a gilded bronze statue known as the Independent Man. Inside, the State Room displays a full-length portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart, and the building preserves the original 1663 royal charter that established the colony's tradition of religious liberty. The grounds offer sweeping views over the city.
