Antongil Bay is a vast, sheltered gulf on the northeast coast of Madagascar, the largest bay on the island and a haven for marine life. Framed by the forested slopes of the Masoala peninsula, its warm waters become a breeding ground for humpback whales between July and September. Fishing villages line the shore, and the surrounding rainforest reaches almost to the tideline in places. The bay played a role in early European trade and piracy, and today draws travellers for whale-watching and the wild convergence of jungle and sea.
